Day 567; August 18, 2016

What an exciting day. First there was the two yolked egg.

Only farm fresh can give you this kind of bonus. How exciting.

Then there was Mildred’s birthday party. I really thought the neighbors were going to call the cops on this wild bunch.

We had a blast. There was soup beans and corn bread, boiled cabbage and fried taters. Mmmmm.

And top it all off With a trip to the Urgent Care to have a bug bite analyzed, diagnosed and medication prescribed. Man these medical professionals are so eager to diagnose the worst. First, over the phone, before anyone looked at it they tried to tell me it was a spider bite and did I know spiders carry the MRSA bacteria.  No, I did not and I said I believed it was a flying insect of some kind as I was outside and felt it sting me several times on my upper back. Of course i never did see it so accurate identification was out of the question. So once the NP looked at it he tried to turn it into shingles. Thanks to the Internet he was able to pull up a picture of shingles for comparison. Thank God I bring my own nurse with me to these visits so she can educate these young medical enthusiasts and slow them down before they have me coming down with the plague or some other exotic disease, slapped in the hospital for “further testing”, poked, prodded and probed to no end before declaring, “it’s just gas”.

Anyway, here it is. You be the judge. Big bight or bubonic plague.

I know, looks knarrly hey?  Well, not to worry. The biggest discomfort was the itching and a shot of prednisone took care of that along with a scrip for a five day taper. Looks like I’m gonna live. Hope that doesn’t disappoint anyone.

God bless.

Day 566; August 17, 2016

Up early, kind of. Ruth had a doctor’s appointment and Annie was scheduled for an x-ray and we are glad to report that all tests and examines were normal.

Normal being a relative term. Annie had a chiropractic appointment and the doctor told here she was out of line and I agreed and told him I’ve been telling her that for a long time. Haha. He got her straightened out.

Since we were in Ironton we stopped by Ungers so that I could get me some walking shoes. Whattaya think?

They’re not Red Ball Jets but hey, not bad. Gonna try them out in the morning, weather permitting.

At the store.

So many cheeses so little time. But they didn’t have my favorite.

It was a rainy, dreary day and on our way back I couldn’t help notice a very sad sight. All my life this factory has been a symbol of strength and prosperity for the area. And now, where there were two, there is only one, and that one is no longer alive and sits waiting for the salvager.  The blue flame that burned steadily for over half a century is no longer.

A quiet reminder of Ashland’s one time greatness.

Alas, life goes on.

As previously stated this has become more of a food blog.

Dinner today consisted of hamburgers made from grass fed beef with my secret recipe.

Burgers were a hit and all are happy.

Tomorrow, pizza with home made crust and home made mozzarella.

Until then, God bless.

Day 565; August 16, 2016

On this day in 1977 Elvis was found dead in his bathroom.  A moment of silence please.

He was 42.  Can you imagine him today, if he had lived?

Finally put the weed eater together and did some trimming. Was going to cut some grass but it rained. Too wet to cut.

Our source for nonhomogenized milk is going out of business. Guess there’s just not enough interest in healthy food around here for a place like that to make it. I tell you what would go gangbusters around here is a fried everything restaurant. Especially if they had a good funnel cake. I guess we’re all just tired of living. There’s not enough excitement in eating well and staying healthy so we opt for a slow suicide. Well, not so much suicide as a laziness towards living well.  Hey, I’m including me in this so don’t give me none of that schoolyard back talk, “well, you do it too”.  I know there is a lot of stuff in the foods we eat that shouldn’t be there and they are harmful to us, but who’s in control here?  We don’t have to buy them or eat them. But some of it is so good.  Right now I’m thinking of a doughnut from Spauldings. I would have to drive to Lexington to get one, and I’m thinking seriously about it. Who’s in?  I knew it. Everyone of you jumped.

So I’m going to contemplate this dilemma through dinner and get back to you.

Scallops, risotto and green beans.

I’ve contemplated and came to a conclusion.  Comfort. We’re comfortable.  And comfort requires no effort as it’s usually a state we have fallen into after a time.

So, to contemplate this we took a drive down by the river after a stop at Dairy Queen. I think better with a Blizzard. A peaceful place for contemplating.

Good night good people. God bless.

Day 564; August 15, 2016

Okay, have some action shots for you today. We were in Catlettsburg checking out Millers Meat Market, they were closed, and on the way back to town it was raining so we pulled off at the picnic area by the river to watch a tug do some parallel parking.

And if that’s not enough excitement for you how about a freight train?

I know, there were two right?  How can you stand it?

Day 563; August 14, 2016

We found a good source for farm fresh eggs. Purchased two dozen then had some for breakfast. Just as expected, delicious.

And bacon jam on toast

Whoops, here I am doing a food blog again.

Here’s a pic of some pre-food. This lovely rooster is headed for the frying pan soon. It’s the last of Mildred’s chickens and since she gave away all the hens it has become quite mean and she wants to get rid of it.

And that concludes today’s episode of where food comes from. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post as we show you where food goes.

Day 562; August 13, 2016

Well, for all of you who start your day with reading about our previous day’s adventures, sorry, running late again. Yesterday was just so adventure packed that by the time it was over I was too tired to type.

It all started with a plan as most days do, and the plan was to pick up some grocery items.  I know it sounds like all we do is eat, but in our attempt to eat healthy we try to get the freshest food available and nonGMO, free range, grass fed and non-homogenized whatever. So first trip was to the Farmer’s Market in Fannin’s parking lot, 7:00 to 2:00 Wednesday and Saturday, but when we got there there was no market nor sign of one. Apparently this is no more but someone forgot to take the sign down.

Since we got a late start and skipped breakfast we were getting a little peckish so decided to try the lunch specials at Hall of Fame. I had the Hall of Fame salad with grilled salmon and lobster bisque.

And Annie had pizza with the House Salad.

Both were good. The only drawback was the pizza and that’s only because they use a conveyor oven.  Otherwise a delicious lunch.

I forgot to mention that on the way to our lunch locale we noticed a block of downtown was cordoned off due to some sort of festival.  Upon further inquiry we found that a local shop, Superheroes T-Shirts and Creamery, which is an odd name in itself, was having a one year anniversary party.

So we stopped by.

Turns out this is a comic book/collectibles/video games/ice cream parlor.

With lots of flavors.

And what event would be complete with some superhero representatives.

Batmobile.

After the big block party we finished our running and headed home.

To be continued:

Day 561; August 12, 2016

There’s a new restaurant in town and it has become quite popular.  It’s called the Kentucky Hall of Fame Cafe.

Good food, drinks, atmosphere and service at reasonable prices it fills a very narrow gap in the area’s venue of restaurant.  It was a very comfortable experience.

A very sophisticated clientele.

And nice presentations.

A good time was had by all.

And as an added bonus here is short video on the “death?” Of a hornet.

And this pic that was omitted from yesterday’s blog. A groundhog enjoying a roadside meal.

Ah, the wildlife.

God bless y’all.

Day 560; August 11, 2016

Meteors. That’s the word of the day.  The Perseid meteor shower is happening now with the peak being this morning.  Well, we went for a drive. We had scoped out a place yesterday we thought would be good and sure enough it did not disappoint.  Standing directly below the Milky Way, which we haven’t seen for years due to being in places with too much light pollution, we counted nine within twenty minutes or so.

Reading up on it there was a lot more predicted and actually we didn’t stay out too late.  We may get a later start tomorrow night and try some early morning observing. It goes on for several days.  According to “The Web”, which is never wrong, this happens every August however every ten years we get this enlarged version, this year being the tenth year in the cycle. I don’t know about you but just seeing all those stars is very exciting to me.

Well it’s around three in the morning and I should be getting some sleep.

Good night and God bless.

Day 559; August 10, 2016

Whew it’s muggy. Florida is hot but I do not think I have experienced humidity like here in Kentucky.  What should be a cool night for porch sitting is a sweat box. I could be in a sauna. I feel like I’m in a sauna.

Today was the kids first day of school and boy were they excited.  They face timed us after school and told us all about it. In addition to recess, lunch and some learning we learned our little girls have boyfriends already. In fact Maddi reported hugging and kissing. Don’t know if her daddy knows about this but he will when he reads the blog.

Got a new lawnmower.

Cut grass today. Annie was worried because of my blood pressure and well, I have been a bit idle lately, but I did it.

And did it dancing.

Of course now I’m wore out. But I do feel better with my lower blood pressure due to my new medication and some exercise.

Went for a drive scouting for good places to watch the meteor shower Friday morning. Think we found a couple out route 3 way but will do a little more research tomorrow.

Some wildlife we saw on our drive. There were hundreds of deer as well but if we took a picture every time we saw deer we would need a bigger website.

For now it’s time for bed. Good night you good people and God bless.

Day 559; August 9, 2016

Day one of life alterations. Had errands to run this morning.  Picked up new and refill meds at Wal Mart this morning and stopped by the new Rural King on the way home.  It reminds me of Tractor Supply just a little more country.

4:30 pm, going to get a lawn mower. I convinced Ruthie to cancel her lawn service and let me cut the grass. This will save her some money each month. That is until she gets my bill.  Just kidding.

8:00 pm, dinner is over.  Oops!  No pictures. So sorry.  Apparently we were too hungry to think of photos.  I’ll try to describe it for you.  There was steak, sweet potatoes, corn on de cob and wine.  Tasty.  And all for about the price of a bucket of KFC.  But much, much better.

Needless to say it’s dog day afternoons here.  Quite warm, right guys?

I think the tongue says it all.

Heat or no heat, another stick had to die.  The offense escapes me at the moment, but tradition demands that justice be served and it is my duty to serve.

Tomorrow we try cutting the grass. This should be fun. Wish I had more pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

One more pic, starting a new quilt.  This will be interesting.

Have a great day.  God bless.
