Day 478, May 20, 2016;  Cape Coral, FL

6 am.  Time to get up and get ready for the day.   Sadie has to be at school at 7:45, I have a doctors appointment at 8:30 and Maddi has to be at school at 9:30.   Kaiden gets on the bus.  Everyone else is piling in the car to make the rounds.

Good morning Florida.

This is what happens when a 5 year old gets your phone with a selfie stick. Silly bird.

DG:  Well it was her birthday and she can do what she wants. As I was told.

So enjoy.

So that’s just some of them. There is not enough room on here for all of them so we may include a few here and there over the next few days.

Papaw and his baby.  Taking a nap.

Maddi got a new bike for her birthday. She loves it!

Annie – Boy, we are wore out tonight.   After school we had a water balloon fight and then since they were wet they got in the pool.   Dinner and now bed!

Goodnight y’all.

Good night Florida and God bless.

Day 477, May 19, 2016; Lakeland, FL;  Cape Coral, FL

DG:  Thank God for grandchildren. Because if we were not on our way  to see our grandkids today I might have thrown a fit already and quite possibly have hurt someone, probably me.

Yesterday we told you about the three hours early they scheduled my pickup. Well that was a clock eater. And the situation we had last night making it to the receiver with no clock left. Then this morning starting one half hour before my scheduled delivery time of 6:00 am, they were finished unloading within a couple of hours but wait, they have a new rule that everything is to be counted before releasing the driver.

09:55 still here. Two hours from home, could’ve been there by now.  Clocks. Please, don’t ever buy me a clock. Zzzzzzz

Well, what do you know, not five minutes after lying down they bring me my paperwork. Most places this is done right after they remove all product from the truck and get an overview of the count, not counting every piece, but rather writing on the BOL “Subject to count”.  And since most all shipments are sealed at the shipper and seal either checked at receiver by security or removed by receiver, there is never hardly any issues. This company however just recently initiated the policy of counting all product before releasing paperwork to the driver meaning we can’t leave until they are finished.

Anyway, we’re here. Praise the Lord.

The birthday girl.

Getting off the bus and seeing Mammie.

Hugs followed. So many hugs.

Pics say it all.

Day 476, May 18, 2016;  Morrow, GA; Stone Mountain, GA; Lakeland, FL

8 am.  Heading to receiver.  Gotta love Atlanta traffic in the am.  We are picking up our load that will take us to Florida to see my babies!!  Maddi’s birthday is tomorrow.

DG:  Well, once again, I am the victim of what I have termed “punished efficiency “.  My trip information said I was to be here by 10:00 am. So I’m here at 9:30, go into receiver office and greeted by a very cordial shipping clerk who most politely informs me that he has repeatedly informed KLLM customer service that this facility does not load prior to 1:00 pm daily, that my load is just now being assembled, but that he will get me loaded ASAP. To which I reply with sincere gratitude.  Next I proceed to the truck, look for the door I was given. No numbers. How can I find my door without a number?  There is another KLLM driver being unloaded so I ask him which door he is in. “Seven”, he says. Good. Then if I am to pull into door 10 then it would be three from him, but which way?  There are a couple of, what I perceive as maintenance workers sitting on a wall at the end of the lot not far from me and observing my confused look inquire if there is assistance they may provide. I say, “Yes, I’m looking for door 10”.  “It should be that way, he says pointing in the direction behind me. “Thanks” I say “where are the numbers?  I don’t see them”. “We took them down while we are painting”.  Good, I thought I was losing cognitive abilities.  So we count three from the other KLLM driver and I find door “10”, attempt a blind side back since there are three open spots.  No good. I get too far to the left. Could have wrangled it around but no need to show off. Turn around and come at it on the driver’s side.

Good, it doesn’t take long for them to give me a red light, which means we are in your trailer or are going to be any minute so don’t move, and shortly after that we feel them shaking the box. At this rate, 11:00 am presently, we may be out of here prior to our scheduled appointment, which I think was KLLM’s plan all along.

Annie – no such luck.  1:45 pm and we are finally on the road.  We figure this is when we would have left if we had gotten here at 1 pm per their request.    So, dispatch is now worried we won’t make it to the receiver at 6 am because the clock has already wasted 4 hours out of the driving day and he still has to take a 10 hour break in there somewhere.  Their solution? Well since you already have been stopped this long just go ahead and take your 10 hour break and then drive on in.   Greg told them flat out NO!  If he does this and runs out his clock getting there then we have to wait for him to take another 10 hour break before we can get on the road to see the kids and Maddi’s birthday.    They screw up the times but we are to adjust our schedule to make it work?   Not this time.  So now Greg has to basically fly to Lakeland Florida in order to get there in time for a break or hopefully find a place really close where we can stop for the night and not have to start the clock to unload.   Whoever said driving a truck would be fun is a nut!

DG:  Nut here. It is fun, most of the time. Now I am sitting by the side of the road waiting for the clock to tick 30. Then drive 20 minutes and stop again, this time for eight hours.

We saw a beautiful magnolia tree at a rest area in Florida.

Annie – We saw this trailer several times tonight.   The back doors kept changing from one figure to three and sometimes the one in the middle had a blue line around it.  Spooky.

Annie – 11:50 pm.   I’m exhausted.    The stress of the last couple of hours has worn me out.   We were running close on time all day.  We knew it was going to be close but felt confident we could make it.   Then traffic, red lights, construction, etc. slowed us down and time was even shorter.   According to the clock if Greg took a 30 minute break he would have almost two hours left on his drive clock and we only have about an hour to go so all seems good.   So we stop and wait.  30 minutes are up, clock shows 1:56 so we take off.    Then about 5 minutes in to the trip we see the clock only says one hour.   What???   That’s not right.   So Greg calls logs and they said KLLM has changed the clocks that if you release the breaks (which we did after we stopped and let Precious out a minute) then the clock goes back to when you first stopped or something like that so the clock only showed a 15 minute break and it took the hour back off.   Panic starting to set in a bit because we were told this load cannot be late.  At this point we have 30 miles to go and no time left on clock so Greg pulls over and calls KLLM for suggestions.   They told him to sit there for 30 minutes and then do mandate to leave to get to truck stop 16 miles down the road.   Ok.   Then we get an email that says for us to go on to receiver and the guard will show us where to park for the night so the load won’t be late.   Hallelujah!    So it is now almost midnight and we are sitting in the grass outside the gate waiting for 5:30 so we can go in.   We had a dinner of cold Popeyes chicken and watching The Story of God with Morgan Freeman and then turning in.   Greg will get up a bit after 5 and drive through the gate and then should be able to go back to sleep while they unload us.   I will probably sleep through that. Haha.   Then we can be on our way to see the babies.   The girls FaceTimed today to see if we were going to make it for Maddi’s birthday.    So sweet.  Hopefully we will be home by the time they get home from school.
I’m turning in.   Goodnight y’all.

DG:  That about says it all. Hope your day was better. Love to all. Good night and God bless.

Day 475, May 17, 2016;  London, KY; Morrow, GA

5 am.   Woke to rain and cold.   Hit the snooze and slept a bit longer.   Hope it doesn’t rain the whole way today.

6 am. Back on the road.  Rain has about quit.   Now just foggy and gray.   Should be in Atlanta early afternoon.

Some pictures through the mountains of Tennessee this morning.

1:30 pm.  Arrived at receiver on time.    Now on to the Atlanta yard for the night.

DG:  I’m tired. Up early, Chattanooga traffic was just a warm up for what was waiting on us in Atlanta.  I do not know why there are not more people killed on the highways seeing how people drive. It has to be by the grace of God. Twice today people passed me on the right side as I was merging onto the highway.  Meaning they had to ride in the emergency lane until they could get around me. What’s the big hurry?  We pray for them constantly that they don’t end up hurting themselves and others.

Well, enough about that. Got a shower, ahhhhhh.  Now for some dinner.

7:30 pm.  Went to Cracker Barrel for dinner.   I kept seeing the campfire chicken dinner being advertised and remembered how good it was.    It did not disappoint this time either.   Greg ordered the ribeye but no picture.   He dove right in.

DG: You’ve seen one rib eye………

It was surprisingly delicious. Was kind of hesitant ordering a steak at Cracker Barrel but I have to say they did not disappoint.

Now with a full belly and a tired body it’s time for some relaxation. Then sleep.

Hope you all had a great day. I know we did. Good night and God bless.

Day 474, May 16, 2016;  Youngstown, OH; Coshocton, OH; London, KY

5:30 am.  On the road again.  Finally!   Headed to Coshocton to get a load for Kraft.

9:15 am.  Pulled in to lot but load not ready yet.   So we wait.   It sure is a beautiful day here in Ohio.   A bit cool but bright and sunny.

11:15 am.  Load ready to go.  We have 38,000 pounds of BACON!

DG:  I gotta tell you something. Bacon is good for me. Getting weighed to make sure we are not over gross and balanced according to DOT regulations.

Have one ahead of me.

Weight good. Close to gross but not over, that’s good. And load is balanced almost equally between drives and trailer. Onward ho!!!!

Annie -Cincinnati, Ohio.

Cement mixer putsy putsy.   That’s what Greg’s dad said to Gregory every time they saw a cement mixer when he was little.

DG:  After the clock eating wait for our loaded trailer to arrive and then driving 18 miles in the opposite direction to the nearest scale to make sure our load was “legal” we got as far as London, KY. We stayed here a couple of months ago on a previous trip south. They have a cafeteria style buffet that is just good old home cooking. I think we mentioned that on our previous visit here. They also have Ale 8, which can only be found in Kentucky and then only certain parts. I know I tried to find it in Paducha and other places in the western part of the state, but no go.

Annie – Greg had the fried chicken dinner.  I had the roast beef with mashed potatoes and gravy.  I think I had the better dinner.  Haha.  Had enough left over for Precious.   She’ll be glad.

It’s good to be back in Kentucky even if only driving through.   I swear the grass is greener than anywhere else we’ve seen.  Plus the rocks and rolling hills.  I just love it.    It’s good hearing the locals talk too.

9 pm.   Better turn in.  5 am comes early.    Goodnight y’all.

Day 473; May 15, 2016; Same place.

DG:  Yes we are still here. Getting lots of rest. Should be ready to drive straight through to Florida.

Annie – 11 am.  Finally got truck back!  And with a blessing.   KLLM talked to Freightliner and they are going to warranty the work so instead of $10,500 it was only $950.  Thank God!

We have a trip to Coshocton, Ohio in the morning to Atlanta, Georgia.    Be glad to be moving again!

4 pm.  Went down the road for some Mexican food.  Then it started to snow.   Not a lot and it was gone in a few seconds but the look on Greg’s face was priceless.  Hahaha

I had the boring chicken chimichangas.   Greg had the shrimp Diablo.  He may be regretting it.   There were tears at one point and he keeps wiping his head from all the sweat.   I think one eye is trying to cross even.

Real tears! He says its sweat but his eyes are suspiciously moist.

DG:  While most Mexican places tone things down a bit for the gringos, this place made no exceptions. Shrimp Diablo meant just that, devil shrimp, and there was a touch of hell in the sauce. Some of the hottest I’ve had to date.  It was delicious. And it was sweat. No tears.

Truck seems to be in good running order now. Some fuel and hook up to trailer in the morning and we’re off. Thank God for the favor.  Didn’t see it coming that way but that’s usually the way He works.

Rising early so this will be good night and God bless.

Annie – Back on the road in the morning!!   Hope to be in Florida Wednesday or Thursday for Maddi’s birthday.

Goodnight y’all!

Day 472; May 14, 2016; Youngstown, OH

DG: Fourth night in the motel. The first two nights were relaxing, relief to be out of the truck. Yesterday I took a cab over to a chiropractor I found on line that did DOT physicals since mine was about to expire. So, the stay has not been totally nonproductive.  Today is Saturday, it’s cold and wet outside so we are kind of stuck inside. There is just so much tv one can watch. So many games on the iPad one can play and very limited food choices that deliver. We opted for Chinese again. Fortunately it’s pretty good. Time out. Commercials are about to end.

Watching one of the Indiana Jones movies. Not sure which one. It’s the one about the crystal skulls.

So many commercials.

Well, didn’t hear from the truck shop. Spoke with them this morning and was told they were putting things back together. Probably be Monday before we get out of here. Then it will be time to head to Florida. So looking forward to that.

Oh, movie’s back on.

Annie – Sitting, laying, sitting, laying.  Not much else to do.   Never thought I would say I would be glad to get back in the truck.

Goodnight y’all.

DG: Got the skull back to its original place and the aliens went back to their own dimension.  Now it’s time for bed.

Hope you all had a wonderful day. Good night and God bless.

Day 471, May 13, 2016; Youngstown, OH

Sat all day.  The part came in but not in truck yet.   Got the estimated repair bill.   Want to see what $10,533 looks like?

They say it’s not covered by warranty but KLLM was trying to work it out with Freightliner.  Otherwise we are going to owe a lot of money.

They are going to work on truck tomorrow but not sure how long it will take to finish.   This is what the old one looked like that they had to replace.

All this is due to government regulations requiring trucks to have this emission system installed.  Lovely!

There is a place across the street that offers massages but it also has an adult book store attached to it so not really interested in a massage right now.

Well, I’m turning in.   See what tomorrow brings.

DG:  Me too.

Day 470, May 12, 2016; Youngstown, OH

6 am.  Called to shop.   They don’t have it in the shop yet.  Mechanic doesn’t come in until 7 am.

7:30 am.  Mechanic can’t get truck in shop until 9 am.  Then he can diagnose it.

10 am.  Going to be here at least another day.  Something to do with the emission system has a hole in it.   I don’t mind another day in a motel though but hits the checkbook.

12:30.  Starving.  Going to walk over to the TA and grab some lunch.
DG:  1:05 pm. Lunch is served.

Sitting in the restaurant I see my truck go down the road. Uh oh, it dawns on me I did not sign off my Qualcomm therefore when that mechanic hits 20 mph my drive clock will start. Then when he stops, after five minutes it will go to on duty status and stay there until I can get to it to change it. Stupid electronic logs. I called logs department but nobody was home.  They can change it I hope. Stupid government regulations.

Got my times changed and logged off. Now they can drive it all they want.

Relaxing in the room, Chinese take out for dinner. TV for entertainment.  Relaxing.

9 pm.  Walked back over to Freightliner to get some Diet Coke out of the machine (they have Diet Pepsi here at the hotel).  Trying not to worry.  There was a guy in the drivers lounge who said he had been waiting since Tuesday.   Another guy yesterday said he had been here 8 days.   I’m hoping they are finished tomorrow.  I’ve got a little girls birthday party to get to next week!!  Plus the no pay thing while we sit here and the hotel room.   But I know there is a reason we are sitting here so will just have faith.

DG:  Well said my dear. I have relaxed myself right into a stupor and can no longer hold open my eyes. I will wish you well and say good night and God bless.

Day 469, May 11, 2016;  White Haven, PA; Youngstown, OH

6:30 am.   Time to get up and head west.   We slept with the windows open last night and at some point Greg closed one of the windows because he was freezing.   I like getting cold and snuggling under the blankets but he said his head gets too cold. Haha.   In his defense too it is 43 degrees this morning.     It’s a little cloudy this morning but doesn’t look like rain.    Hope we miss the storms out west.

Such a pretty river snuggled in the hills.

DG:  You’re right. Youngstown isn’t very far from White Haven, PA.  Seems that the government has interjected itself one more time to stifle American commerce.  You see, in the old days diesel trucks were very simple. They used fuel made from oil. It burned in the cylinders and the left over gases came out the exhaust. It was smelly but non-toxic. Actually rather clean for fossil fuel exhaust.    But people just can’t seem to leave things alone. Government people that is. So they came up with a system that uses a filter to catch the particulates and a fluid to aid in the conversion of those particulates into something they determine less toxic than clean air. And some of you may remember when diesel fuel was less expensive than regular grade gasoline. Well those days are long gone due to more government involvement requiring all diesel fuel be made of a percentage of biodiesel, soy beans. That runs the cost up significantly. And on top of that with the additional hardware required on the vehicles and you have more cost added. Which brings us to our present situation.  Yesterday I got a check engine light on my dash. Googled what it meant and found instructions on how to obtain a code that would identify the problem. Code indicated there was either something wrong with the exhaust system or a sensor within the system going bad. Truck was running okay so I was guessing it was the sensor. Not trusting my limited Diesel engine knowledge I call KLLM road breakdown. Apparently they have prior knowledge of this problem and instructed me to try something to determine definitively if there was a real problem. Real problem confirmed we were routed to the closest Freightliner repair shop. That’s how we ended up in Yoingstown. Four hours later, we are still waiting.

5 pm.  Headed to motel.   Truck hasn’t even been in the shop yet and they don’t know when they will get to it.   So, off we go.   We have until tomorrow evening to get the load to Illinois so we should be ok if truck is ready to go in the am.

6 pm.  Ordered pizza and settling in.    Watching the weather it looks like our little delay may be a blessing in disguise with all the horrible storms and tornadoes in Indiana and Illinois.   I saw where they even had one in Kentucky.   Glad we are staying put tonight.

We went to get a Diet Coke to go with the pizza and when we came back in we couldn’t find Precious.   Then I noticed the lump.   I guess I have the air set too low for her.  Haha

10:30 pm.  Turning in.  Hoping they call early.   Goodnight y’all.
