Day 488, May 30, 2016;  Lancaster, TX; Tallulah, LA

3:40 am.   Woken up by thunder, lightening and rain.   Really pouring.  Sounds good on the truck roof.  Back to sleep.

7:30.  Time to get up and do what we did yesterday.   Head to Waco.    Then on to Kennesaw, GA.    Got to get a trailer wash out and fuel.  Then on our way.    Looks like a bright sunny day.   No rain in site.

11 am.  Made it to shipper.  Picked up 42,000 pounds of Starbursts.   That’s a lot of Starbursts.

1 pm.  Stopped to grab some lunch.  It’s great to find a good place with truck parking!   I had smoked chicken and Greg had ribs.   We also got some brisket for sandwiches for supper.   So yummy!

6:30 pm.  Well, that was a close one.   Apparently when we had the emissions thing put on a couple of weeks ago the mechanics didn’t put the cover and steps back on tight enough.   I had noticed a wiggle in the step when I got out of the truck but I guess the rough roads of Texas and Louisiana shook the screws the rest of the way loose.   I went to get out of the truck and almost landed on my backside.   So, stopped for a bit while Greg goes to the shop here at Loves and gets the screws he needs and fixes it.   Thank you Lord for protection!

9:30 pm.  Alright.  That’s it!   I am not getting out of the truck the rest of the night.   We Parked at a Loves truck stop.  Went in for bathroom and ice.   In the line paying for the ice and Greg sets it down to pay and it falls over on my big toe.  Gracious sakes!

DG:  I told her to put some ice on it.

Sorry about the quick publishing, but I was falling asleep while writing that and couldn’t see to do any more. Her toe is fine. She just walked it off.

Okay, that’s about it. God bless all you all.  On the road again.

Day 487, May 29, 2016;  Oklahoma City, OK; Lancaster, TX

8 am.  Up and ready to get on the road but during the pre-trip inspection Greg noticed another flat tire.  This one is behind the one that had the broken air line.   So, now we are headed to Petro truck stop because they have a tire care center to see what needs to be done.  It’s close so I guess we don’t have to worry about driving on it.    Lovely, just lovely!

DG:  Tire is flat but intact. Just came off the rim, don’t know how that happened.

See the gap between the tire and the rim?  That’s where the air leaks out.

9:40am, almost ready to go. Work is done. Now for the paperwork. Soon we will be back on the road.

Had to take a picture of this. The cars are for the Richard Petty Driving Experience.

Oklahoma pictures

Worlds largest resort and casino.

3:30 pm.  Made it to the Lancaster yard to check on trip.   Our load isn’t due in Waco until 6/1 but we don’t want to wait that long and sit so earlier Greg asked dispatch if we could deliver early.  Two people emailed back and said yeah go on down and deliver.   One said no.   Not sure what to do so we stopped in Lancaster to check with office before going on.  Good thing we did.  Load can’t deliver until 6/1.  So we are going to park trailer and hopefully get another load on out and someone else will take this to Lancaster Wednesday.

6 pm. Told by dispatch we could go ahead and take our load on to Waco and pick up another load to go to Kennesaw Georgia. Off we go.

7:30.  Arrived at receiver only to be told we couldnt deliver as no one was there until TUESDAY!!   So, off we go back to the yard in Lancaster.  What a crazy day!

Pictures of Texas.

First the cloud spirit was smiling.  Then he got upset.   Then he got angry.

And then things got nasty.  We made it back to the yard just in time.

This was Gregory’s afternoon.   Maddi is on the raft.  Sadie is the fish in the water.

9:30 pm. Showered and waiting on laundry. Good thing about coming to the yard is its free! Going to eat a bite and go to bed. Heading back to Waco in the morning it looks like.

Goodnight y’all.

DG:  Well, this is what you get when you don’t take the time to read.  KLLM delivers to and ships for Mars candy out of the Romark warehouse in Waco, TX and they are open 24/7.  My load was going to the Army and Air Force Exchange Service which also has a warehouse in Waco, but they are M-F and never on holidays, especially Memorial Day. Mars is a drop and hook, AAFES is live load and unload. So apparently no one in planning or dispatch read the name and address of the receiver assuming it was the place we go to most often, Mars. I should have questioned it when the local dispatch told me to go get that load in Waco and take the trailer whose number he had written on a post-it note. When I saw the number it was the trailer I had just brought in and dropped. He said that was okay, take it, drop it and pick up the loaded trailer going to Kennesaw.  This is after he told me, half an hour earlier, that that receiver was live load only. I guess I figured he had talked to someone and things had changed. He hadn’t and they hadn’t. So when I get to the AAFES warehouse the guard comes out to meet me and tells me there is no one in the warehouse today and they won’t be back until Tuesday morning. Soooooo, back to Lancaster.  And the rest they say is history. However, we are keeping the trip going to Kennesaw cause now we have an empty trailer. No, the one for AAFES is still here on the lot and will be taken by a local driver in a couple of days. At least we won’t be sitting for two or three days. Praise the Lord.

Be blessed and we will write more and picture post more tomorrow. See ya in the funny papers.

God bless.

Day 486, May 28, 2016;   Edwardsville, IL;  Oklahoma City, OK

4 am.  I’m not ready!  Oh well.  Time to get up and find caffeine.   Headed back over to warehouse to get candy to take to Waco.   I did get a free Take 5 candy bar yesterday.  Yummy!  DG: Two bars.

6 am.  Good morning from St. Louis , Missouri.

Meramec River

Casconade River.   Missouri is gorgeous today.

All kinds of metal sculptures in this yard. Hmmm

3:30 pm.  Stopped at The Big Cabin in Oklahoma so Precious could get a giant chicken leg for supper.   Greg got catfish and I had chicken tenders.

Gorgeous day in Oklahoma too!

Tulsa Oklahoma

Well, crap.   Just outside of Oklahoma City and heard a pop.  Looked in side mirror and saw pieces of tire fly out from under the truck.   Thankfully we were one mile from a truck stop.   Looks like a tire on the trailer blew and the air line came loose from another and is losing air.  Called road breakdown and a tire service is on the way.   So thankful we were so close to a truck stop!

Looks like we will stay here tonight.   Only had about an hour to go before we had to stop anyway.    Upside is there is an Indian restaurant next door with great reviews.   It’s been forever since I’ve had some curry!!

Saw a beautiful thistle plant on the way to the Indian restaurant.

And a pretty rose bush when we got there.

Got our dinner.   We are having chicken curry and chicken tikka masala with jasmine rice and naan.    So good.   Extra spicy the way we like it.

The tires are all fixed.  First guy came and changed the flat tire but couldn’t fix the air leak on the other tire so they had to send a mechanic.   Now he is done too.   Now we can head out in the morning on time.

10 pm.  Turning in.   Got about 250 miles to go tomorrow.     Goodnight y’all.

DG:  Annie is so good at giving all the details I hardly have anything add.

I probably should be adding the life lessons living on the road has taught us, me in particular, but not just yet. Let me think about it.

I was impressed with the tire repair. I asked the guy if he needed me there that I was going to take a shower, thinking this is going to take him an hour at least, and he replied by telling me that he would be done in fifteen minutes. I jokingly said I was going to time him and he insisted that I do that as he had been timed before. I smiled and thought to myself he may be quick with the wrench but fifteen minutes, ah, not quite believing that. You know what?  It was more like seven or eight minutes and the tire was on the rim and being inflated. It took him longer to do the paperwork than it did to change the tire. I was telling Annie about it after he left and she suggested that I should have taken a video of it. Now why didn’t I think of that. It was over too quickly. I told him I was really impressed with that and would be super appreciative to have a tire changed that fast if I was on the road with my clock running. Nice fellow. But he couldn’t fix the other problem. For that we needed to have a mechanic.

Back on the phone to road breakdown. Now they could have taken care of this with one call if they had called the TA truck stop just down the road. That’s who they called to come fix the airline and they also do tires. However, KLLM is owned by the same family that owns Southern Tire Mart and there happens to be one of these in Oklahoma City so that’s who was sent to change the tire. Keeping it in the family so to speak.

So the mechanic shows up and he’s not here very long at all and now both issues are resolved and we are ready to roll. After some sleep if course.

So ends another exciting day of life on the road with the Hills. Hope your day was more blessed than ours and may all your days be filled with blessings and God’s favor.  And be sure and remember this weekend those brave souls who have everything so that we can enjoy the freedom and liberty we have in this greatest of all countries. Good night.

Day 485, May 27, 2016;  New Paris, OH; Edwardsville, IL

6 am.   I am not close to being awake yet.   Not sure why.  Slept pretty good once it cooled down a bit.   I just need 2-3 more hours maybe.   But, time to get on the road.    Must find caffeine.  I did find a pretty patch of daisies to greet me this morning which was nice.

Good morning Indiana!

Looks like the corn is coming up.

12:30 pm.  Made it to receiver without any problems.   Smells like chocolate around here.

We got a new trip.  It’s picking up candy from here and taking it to Waco Texas but load won’t be ready until 10 pm.   Greg wants to go to truck stop and take a nap and get on the road late to try to avoid some of the holiday traffic.

DG: But he opted for more sleep.

1 pm.   Stopped at a Flying J only two miles away.    There is a parking lot full of trucks waiting on trailers.    Oh well.   Going to try to sleep a bit.

6 pm.  Getting up to eat a bit.   They have a Denny’s.   I’m getting the bourbon chicken but without the blaakolli.  Haha

Saw this picture.  This is not the evolution of man but evolution of the truck driver after driving all day and then trying to go in to the truck stop.

DG:  Accirding to my experience we stay crouched a little longer.

10:00 pm and headed for bed. Getting up at 4:00 to avoid the holiday weekend traffic. We have plenty of time to deliver so no stress, but don’t want to dilly dally.

God bless all you all and good night.

Day 484, May 26, 2016;  Hopewell, PA;  New Paris, OH

9:30 am.  Time to get up and head down the road.    Won’t get all the way there today but most of the way we hope.  It was only 60 degrees last night so we slept with the windows down and fan on. Good way to sleep.   Looks like a pretty day today.

12:30 pm. Stopped at a travel plaza outside Pittsburgh.  They had a little Amish farmers market going on.   We bought some apples and blueberries and some raspberry jalapeño jelly.   Sounds great.   They were out of fresh strawberries but the guy said the farmer was bringing more this afternoon.    Too late for us but I’m sure others will enjoy.  Greg had a banana and blueberry smoothie which he said was great with the fresh berries.   My lunch consisted of pretzels and hummus.   They had Quiznos and Burger King in the travel plaza but we just couldn’t bring ourselves to eat it.  When this is over we may never eat sandwiches again. Lol.

Some shots around Pittsburgh.

DG:  8:30 pm, stopped for the night at a rest area in Ohio. We are on I-70 and I gotta tell ya there is a world of difference between these rest area and the ones on I-80.  No showers, no lounge, no food court. Just bathrooms and picnic tables.

Got out of the truck to catch the sunset. Standing next to a farmer’s field I realize how much I miss land.

DG:  9:20, getting ready for bed. It’s cool out so won’t need to run the a/c but we are really close to the cow barn and the odor is prevalent. But you don’t notice after a while. I hope.

I like rest areas for sleeping. They are not nearly as busy and noisy as truck stops. Trucks are constantly moving around in truck stops and everybody has a refer, and they are noisy.

So, I’ve been contemplating my recent encounters with very unhappy people. First there was the scouting incident when I ever so innocently, but with perhaps a touch of accusation, inquired of one of the scouting personnel as to why my grandson came back from his outing with such a severe sunburn.  To which I was told, “We tried to keep sunscreen on them” and some other lame excuse that everyone was sunburned to which I exploded, ahem, politely inquired with all CAPS, “SO THE 12 YEAR OLDS WERE IN CHARGE?” That excited another member of the group so much so that he felt compelled to come running toward me perhaps to better hear my next question at which point my son, ever my hero, jumped between us spouting some liberal jibberish like, “Let’s all just calm down now”, something like that. I don’t know where he picked up that kind of language. Showing no fear, and really feeling no anger, just the head spinning confusion as to what I was hearing. Does no one take responsibilities for their actions anymore?  No one?  I was standing there listening to adults that were supposed to be in charge of a group of 11&12 year olds telling me that they were powerless to overcome the will of these children in order to protect them. Boy, good thing the kids didn’t insist on going alligator hunting. I truly could not believe what I was hearing, but then I could. I’ve heard it too often these day.

On to my next encounter. Leaving Florida with a load of paint I pulled into the first truck stop I came to in order to check my weight and make sure I was legal. The line for the scale and the fuel line was nearly one in the same however when I got up to the scale there was another truck on the scale already so I stayed to the left so that drivers wishing to fuel could go around me and get to the pumps. A trucker pulled up behind me and since the truck was still on the scales I got out and went back to tell him if he was getting fuel to go ahead around me as I was waiting on the scale. Another driver pulled up behind me and I did the same for him since the scale was still being occupied and he told me he was waiting on the scale as well. A couple of more trucks came around and went to fuel while I was still waiting on the scale. About the time the truck that had taken up residence in the scale started moving I checked my mirror and there is a truck coming up beside me. I’m assuming he is going to fuel. Wrong. He goes just a little bit past the scale then cuts back to line up for it and pulls right up there ahead of me and the guy behind me. Well, I’m thinking he just didn’t see me flashing my blinker and starting to turn in that direction so I felt compelled to inform him of the situation.  Walking up to his truck I notice a couple of military stickers on the side, one of them indicating that he was a Vietnam Vet. No matter, rude is rude and needs to be pointed out. Standing there beside his truck I also notice it is old and in very questionable operational mode noting that the driver’s door is held closed by a ratchet strap. I look up at the old bearded veteran and explain to him that he jumped in front of two other drivers waiting for the scale, one of them me. I see his mouth moving and his expression is not one that would indicate he is happy we are having this conversation, but I can’t hear him because his window is still up. I yell so that he might hear me, “roll your window down”, also making a winding motion with my hand in case he is actually deaf which is unlikely because you have to pass a hearing test to pass your DOT physical, but this guy may be driving withou a license, I don’t know. He is assuredly ignorant of truck stop scaling etiquette. His temperament is not improving and he seems to be very agitated that I would suggest that he has not followed the rules of common courtesy.  Then he does something so ridiculous that it almost made me laugh. In an apparent attempt to scare me, I assume, he jerks the door hard as if trying to open it and jump out on me, and as I mentioned, it is being held closed by a ratchet strap. So, deciding my new acquaintance has neither the desire for parlay or showing any semblance of common courtesy I give up on my efforts at cultural enlightenment and walk away.  I hope he had a better evening.

Next comes the impatient driver, that be me, and the driver who doesn’t close his door when leaving the cab of his truck which is one of the first things one is taught when learning to drive one of these things.

So I’m at the Sherwin-Williams warehouse in Fredricksburg, PA to deliver the load of paint we brought from Florida. I’m given a door to pull into but have to wait on the other driver to pull out of that door. I drive to the other end of the lot to turn around to position correctly for backing and wait for my opening. There is a truck up ahead to my left, about 12 feet from the curb and it appears he is adjusting his tandems. There is enough room for me to go up, turn around and pull between him and the curb to wait.  As I make my turn and approach the opening I notice he has left his door open. So I stop. I’m beside his cab as he comes back to his truck and me with my window down, he looks up and with quite the attitude asks, “You couldn’t wait 10 seconds?”  I didn’t know what to say as I didn’t see a problem, so I said nothing, but I imagined while assessing the situation, a quick shove of my door and this turkey would be on his back on the pavement.  Oops!  But I didn’t. So what’s up with these encounters?  I don’t know. Something in the air I guess. Oh well, we’re all safe and healthy, the kids are well and God is in control. Thank you Jesus.

Annie – stopping for the night in New Paris, Ohio.   It’s a quiet place but as mentioned above, quite smelly.    Between the manure and the drivers who cannot apparently make it to the bathroom and insist on peeing in the parking lot I am hoping my nose doesn’t fall off.   We have about 300 miles to go tomorrow.  We had a lot of construction in Pennsylvania and that slowed us down quite a bit.   Now we get to bounce across Indiana and Illinois tomorrow.   Yay!

Good night y’all.

Day 483, May 25, 2016;  Ashland, VA; Hopewell, PA

10 am.  Slept in a bit this morning.  Don’t have to be in Pennsylvania until 8 pm so no need to start clock early.   Going to head in and have a leisurely breakfast and hang out a bit before getting on the road.

DG:  Like I have said, “You never know what you are going to see on a truck”.

How about four giant monkeys.

Rappahannock River in Fredericksburg Virginia.

I think the reason the guys in Washington want everyone using electric cars is so that they and their employees can use the fuel powered cars.

7:30 pm. Made it to our stop in plenty of time.  We were met at the gate by a groundhog.  Don’t see those too often.

8:30.  Unloading was quick.  That’s good.   Now we’re on our way to Reese in Hershey Pennsylvania for next load.

10 pm.  Picked up a load of 41,000 pounds of Reese’s mini pieces.    Now to find somewhere to park for the night.

11:30 pm.  Pulled in to a travel plaza in Hopewell, Pennsylvania for the night.  Blessed to have a spot.  We stopped at a truck stop 30 miles back and it was full.

Going to turn in.  Goodnight y’all.

DG:  Tired I am and sleep I must get. Traffic tires one as one is tried by traffic. Use the force and force the use. It’s all good.

Good night you good people, may God richly bless you above and beyond all of your expectations.

Day 482, May 24, 2016;  Brunswick, GA; Ashland, VA

Ahhhh.   Brunswick, Georgia.  One of our favorite places to visit – in the spring and fall.   We love to go over to Jekyll Island and see all the old mansions, plantations  and the beach.  It’s like stepping back in time.   The first time we went the mansions were run down and the island was almost deserted.   Now they have fixed everything up, added golf courses and tourist stuff.   The mansions are now hotels or B&B’s.   It’s a great place to see sea turtle nests too.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jekyll_Island
10 am On the road.   We can take our time a bit as the appointment isn’t until 8:30 pm tomorrow and we only have 750 miles to go.

Brunswick River

Turtle River

Altamaha River

I love this picture with the clouds mirrored in the water.

12 pm.  Passing through Savannah.   Another place we have been to several times and is a big favorite.   It’s a huge port city and they have dozens of shops on the water front and restaurants.   You can sit and watch big cargo ships go by.   There’s jugglers, musicians, artists and even a guy who makes roses out of corn stalk.   Such a neat place.  Greg likes all the civil war history.

Savannah River

Stopping for a bit of lunch in Manning South Carolina.

DG:  Looking for some of Annie’s relatives, but so far no luck.

My expert navigator found a truck stop close to a Mexican restaurant.   So guess what was for lunch?

Annie had the chicken chimichanga and I had shrimp Mexican.  Yes, they had shrimp Diablo but I’m not quite ready to try that again. Just yet. Anyway, all was delicious. Time to get back on the road.

11 pm.   Stopping for the night in Ashland.  Virginia that is.   We got through Richmond without any traffic.   Hope we have good luck going through DC area tomorrow.   Only about 230 miles to go tomorrow.

Don’t tell Precious I was looking at another chichuahau.    But it was cute.

Turning in.   Goodnight y’all.

DG:  Precious saw the picture. Now she is upset.

That’s her, “I’m very hurt” look. Poor thing. She is feeling better. Thank God.

Coming through Richmond it looks a lot different than the first time we visited. That would be back around 1994-95, don’t remember exactly but it was so long ago they sold driving tours on cassette tapes and whatever car we had at the time had a player. Seems like another lifetime now. It is an interesting city anyway.

Not much traffic as Annie stated and though it was late when we got here there were still several parking spaces left.

We parked and watched some tv and now we’re sleepier than we were before the tv so it’s off to bed.

Hope everyone is doing well. Goodnight and God bless.

Day 481, May 23, 2016;  Cape Coral, FL; Brunswick, GA

6 am.  Up to get Sadie on the bus and get headed down the road.    She loves school and usually jumps right up when time to go.   Not me when I was her age.

7:30 am.  Get to the truck.  No load yet but not unexpected as planners don’t get in until 8 am eastern time.

10 am.  Still waiting on a trip.  They sent us one but it doesn’t pick up until tomorrow and isn’t due for 4 days and only 600 miles.   No thanks.

11:30 am.  Got a trip.  Going to Orlando to Sherwin Williams and going to Sherwin Williams in Fredericksburg, Pennsylvania.   Much better trip.

Gorgeous day for shrimping!

4:30 pm.  Made it to Sherwin Williams in plenty of time.   Busy busy place.   Trucks are double parked on both sides of lot.  Glad we have a door already!

Now some more pictures from the actors in the family.  I’ve got to quit leaving my phone lying around.

DG:  What can I say, it runs in the family.

We had such a wonderful time. So much fun.  Poor Kaiden didn’t have any fun. He got so sunburned on his camping trip he missed school today and will probably miss tomorrow. Oh, and he got appointed to the National Honor Society.  So proud of him.

A boy called lobster. We all felt so bad for him.

Okay, I drove all day so sleep is catching up to me. Hope you all had a great weekend. God bless.

Day 480; May 22, 2016; Cape Coral, FL

DG: Waiting to hear from dispatch, I gave in and called them. Inquiring as to the status of my trip was told I was on schedule for Tuesday at ten.  No way Jose. I sent word prior to going offline for home time that I would be ready 8:00 am Monday.  They corrected the schedule. Will still have to wait till morning to find out if I have a trip.

Good night and God bless.

Day 479; May 21, 2015; Cape Coral, FL

DG:  Lots of shopping today. The girl’s fish tanks were dirty so we got them cleaned up, bought some more fish and accessories for both tanks. Tanks looking much better now.

Found this interesting bit of feline accessory at Wal Mart. Hold onto your hats folks this is a $10 piece of cardboard. That’s right. Cardboard. Nothing fancy about it. Just packaged for your everyday cat afficianado who will spend any amount on anything that they think their little puss and boots might enjoy.

It’s cardboard.  I’m in the wrong business.

Found two angels asleep in our bed.

My wife and son gave me a new portrait of themselves for my wallpaper.

Aren’t they both so beautiful?  Can you feel the love?  I can.

So that’s today in my world. You?  How’d your day go?  Hope you had as much fun as I have had.

Good night and God bless.
